Six Rivers Paddling Club August Outing

by Dave Krueger

This year, the club opted to do a base camp and to different runs on the Trinity River instead of the standard overnight canoe camp out. A small group of us, Eric and Pam, Tim , and Carol and Dave set up a base camp at Trinity Adventures Campground at Big Flat early Saturday morning. By the time we had tents pitched, shuttle run, and ready to set out from the Big Flat put in, temperatures had risen appreciably to a pleasant high 90°s. We had a pleasant day on this section of the river, a wonderful section to warm up on as this was the Eric and Pam’s first outing of the year, and Carol was putting her shoulder to a paddling test for the first time. Dave and Tim were along for the ride and to have a fun time! The group had opted to take out below French Creek at the Del Loma access, and afterwords decided that at 1200 CFS from the dam, French Creek Rapid is a serious 3+ rapid.

Back at camp, Pam tried out her new hammock, and both she and Tim decided it was a great success. After a couple rounds of cribbage, it was time for dinner, fresh salmon, and potatoes with salad. For entertainment, that evening the young campers next-door reminded us of what it’s like to be young-well at least in your 20s again.

Sunday morning everyone except for Eric headed up to the Straw House for a hot beverage before breakfast. After breaking camp, we headed down to Hayden Campground in the put in. On the way, the Chuck and Jan and family passed us heading east, and we later found out they were doing an easy section upstream. Ruth is rumored to be learning how to paddle a solo canoe!

Sunday, the five of us enjoyed another very pleasant day on the river. At 1200 CFS Hayden to Cedar run is simply delightful. After scouting Picket Fence, everyone except for Carol and Dave decided to run it. Carol was still feeling rather weak with her steering strokes, so opted to play it very conservatively, so she and Dave portaged. After a quick lunch at Sandy Bar, we raced to the takeout to beat the wind, we were successful!

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend for all.

Looking forward to September’s outing.
